Look after your skin from the inside
Why? Water is essential to optimum skin health.
There may have been a trend for juicing in recent years, but it actually makes very good sense when it comes to your skin. Drinking water is one way to hydrate, but eating your water is thought to be a more efficient way for your body to absorb hydration, plus by juicing fruits and vegetables you’re also absorbing vitamins and minerals. Keep your juices green though - add too much fruit and you’ll give yourself a hit of fructose. Add lemon and lime for additional hydration and to act as a preservative (great if you make your juice before the gym).
CUT DOWN ON SUGAR:
Try a natural alternative or simple cut down on sugary foods and snacks.
LOAD UP ON OMEGA-3s:
Not all fat is created equal and there’s a lot of evidence that the good fats in foods such as nuts, oily fish and seeds can be a great addition to your diet. Try adding oily fish, such as salmon, into your diet twice a week and take a daily fish oil supplement.
CUT DOWN ON COFFEE:
No one is saying you shouldn’t have a delicious latte in the morning, but maybe stop at one. Or, switch out your regular coffee for green tea or mushroom coffees, which contain around half the caffeine.
Stress not only makes us feeling irritable, overwhelmed and emotional, it can also play havoc with skin. That dull, drawn complexion that shows up when we’re under stress is often the first sign the body shows us that it’s struggling. Meditation is well-known for its ability to help reduce everyday stress and create mental, physical and emotional calm. Download an app and try meditating for ten minutes every day - even if you don’t think you’re all that good at it to begin with - and watch the appearance of your skin come back to its best.
We’re not necessarily talking about hammering the weights room or going as fast as you can on the treadmill, but any kind of exercise that makes you feel better for having done it. Whether it’s a long walk with the dog, an exercise class or a dynamic yoga session it’ll help increase blood flow. Plus, regular exercise is known to lower everyday stress and improve mood, all of which shows up in your skin.
GET BETTER SLEEP:
We’re not talking about getting more sleep, but the ways in which you can get the most out of the sleep you are getting. Create a schedule; try to go to sleep and wake up at the same time every day - that’s right, no snoozing that alarm in the morning. Bodies respond really well to routines so if you can get it into the habit of going to bed at the same time every day it’s more likely to fall into a routine of slipping into deep sleep. Try to switch off all devices at least an hour before you go to bed and keep them out of the bedroom.
